Walt Donovan

This week is the 48th anniversary of Hurricane Donna – which struck Florida’s west coast. The director of Civil Defense in Collier County during the 1960 hurricane season, Walt Donovan, speaks about his memories of the category four storm at the Naples Preserve Friday afternoon at 3:30. He took copious notes during the storm and used them to write “Hurricane Alert”, a novel published in 1970. Donovan says the book spurred two attempts on his life because it addressed the political tensions that peaked during the storm. And he says Collier citizens had a false sense of security during Hurricane Donna. Donovan spoke with WGCU’s Valerie Alker about his memories.

A South Florida woman whose husband died in the first anthrax attack of 2001 was among the victims and survivors "de-briefed" by the FBI this week. Maureen Stevens says she’s certain the FBI was onto the right man – but that she remains bitter. Doug Phillips reports:

A Conversation With Dr. Sylvia Earle

National Geographic “Explorer in Residence” Dr. Sylvia Earle is in Sarasota this week receiving an award from the Mote Marine Laboratory. The award, named for Mote’s founding director, Eugenie Clark, was given to Earle for her decades of exploration in the field of marine science. WGCU’s John Davis spoke with Dr. Earle.

Fort Myers Teen Meets President Bush

It was a surreal experience for one Fort Myers teen; meeting the president of the United States. President George Bush met with and presented an award to 19-year Josh Kelchner Friday at Southwest Florida International Airport before attending a fundraiser in Naples. WGCU’s Luis Hernandez has more.

Charleston Nine Ride

Carl Hiaasen on Golf

Carl Hiaasen is well known as an author who often skewers the Sunshine State. He’s done so in a series of novels in which his anti-heroes are often champions of the environment – and in his weekly column in the Miami Herald. But in his latest book Hiaasen returns to his roots – golf. He told WGCU’s Valerie Alker he recently picked up a club again after a more than 30 year hiatus. His new book is titled “The Downhill Lie – a Hackers Return to a Ruinous Sport.

Oliver North in Southwest Florida

Former Marine, Oliver North was in Fort Myers Thursday leading the 25th annual community prayer breakfast. The breakfast, which marked the National day of Prayer, also coincided with the release of North’s twelfth book. WGCU’s Matthew Kay was there and has this report.
