Hurricane Charley - Five Years After

Governor Charlie Crist paid a visit to Punta Gorda Thursday marking the 5th
Anniversary of the day Category 4 Hurricane Charley made landfall in
the small gulf coast city.  He spoke at the newly built Charlotte
Harbor Event Center – which sits on the site of the old municipal
auditorium destroyed by the storm.  WGCU’s Valerie Alker reports.

Charleston Park

State Road 80 east from Ft. Myers  in Lee County meanders through many older communities. There are the river towns  of Alva, Olga, and Ft. Denaud. (duh-no) And on the south side of roadway there’s Charleston Park. If you weren’t looking for it – you’d never know it was there.  But it has been since 1926, and many descendants of the original residents who worked in the surrounding fields and groves are still there.  WGCU’s Valerie Alker took a ride through Charleston Park this week with longtime community activist Alice Washington and recorded her story.

Roberto Clemente Exhibit

There's a special exhibit about Roberto Clemente at the North Collier Regional Park. The show runs through December 27th. WGUC's Luis Hernandez recently spoke with producer Bernardo Ruiz about his award winning documentary of Roberto Clemente. The film aired on PBS American Experience

Underwater archeologists are exploring a cave deep below the surface of a fresh water spring in North Port for the first time in more than three decades. The work is funded by a grant from the National Geographic Society. They’re looking for clues about prehistoric life in Florida, and perhaps fundamentally change the archeological record. WGCU’s Mike Kiniry took a trip out to the spring and has this report…

Seminole Battle Re-Enactments

Once a year for the last nine years a group of re-enactors gather on a field in the everglades to relive the bloody battles of the second Seminole war. For two days in front of hundreds of spectators, under the leadership of a group of Seminoles, they try to show a side of history most have never learned. WGCU’s Luis Hernandez attended this year and has this report.
