Virtual Dementia Tour

According
to the Alzheimer’s Association more than five million Americans are
afflicted with the disease, with a new case diagnosed every 70
seconds.  Folks with Alzheimer’s or other age-related dementia can
require intensive care.  In an effort to sensitize caregivers, one
elder advocate created what’s called the Virtual Dementia Tour: a
sensory simulation giving people a glimpse into the mind of someone
struggling with dementia.  WGCU’s John Davis took the tour and prepared
this report.

Rabid Bat on Fort Myers Beach

Lee
County Health Department officials are looking for five young boys who
could be in danger of having rabies after they played with a bat at
Fort Myers Beach last week.  WGCU’s Luis Hernandez reports.

Free CPR & AED Classes

Roughly 300-thousand people die in the U-S every year from sudden cardiac arrest according to the American Red Cross. If CPR is applied within the first ten minutes the chances of survival increase to almost 50-percent.  As part of CPR and AED awareness week in June the Urgent Care Center of Southwest Florida is trying to get more people certified in the proper use of both. So it’s offering free classes. WGCU’s Luis Hernandez reports.

Senate Drywall Hearing

A Senate subcommittee on Health and Product Safety Issues Associated with Imported Drywall met today/Thursday for the first time. A Cape Coral homeowner dealing with the problems associated with Chinese drywall in his house testified. Matt Laslo reports from Washington.

Bull Shark Drug Study

Researchers
at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota say a recent study found traces
of pharmaceutical drugs in some bull sharks in the Caloosahatchee

Swine Flu Update

The
number of swine flu cases in Florida is growing. As of Tuesday morning
the state department of health reports five confirmed cases in four
different counties. There are 15 other possible cases statewide with
dozens of samples being checked out. Lee County has two confirmed with
a third possible case. WGCU’s Luis Hernandez looks at the school where
all three cases were found and how officials are trying to contain the
virus from spreading.
