9-11 First Responders Bill

President Obama recently signed legislation creating a medical fund for 9-11 responders.  Among those being helped by the new law is one southwest Florida firefighter.  WGCU’s Valarie Edwards reports.

TECO Update

Fire Districts in Florida are funded by property taxes.  In recent years they’ve seen their budgets shrink along with the value of the homes they’re meant to protect.  Next Tuesday voters in one Lee County fire district will be asked if they’d like to try a different approach: a flat fee annual assessment.  WGCU’s Mike Kiniry has more…

Measuring Underwater Oil Plumes

U.S. Senator Bill Nelson made stops in Fort Myers and Sarasota Wednesday.  He’s introducing a bill directing the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration to come up with a plan for measuring and dealing with oil in underwater plumes from the Deepwater Horizon blowout within 45 days.  The Florida Democrat is a vocal, longtime opponent of offshore drilling.  WGCU’s Valerie Alker has more.

Congressman Mack in Bonita Springs

U.S. Congressman Connie Mack met with Emergency Operations officials and a boom manufacturer in Bonita Springs Wednesday.  The Fort Myers Republican reiterated his anger about the federal response to the BP oil spill in the Gulf.  WGCU’s John Davis reports.

9-11 Remembrance at the Imaginarium
