State House District 73

State House District 73 stretches across Lee County from North Fort Myers south to Whiskey Creek…and east out to the Hendry County Line. Republican first term incumbent Nick Thompson is being challenged for his seat by political newcomer, Democrat. WGCU’s Mike Kiniry spoke to both candidates and has this report.

Hispanic Vote

Some people want to believe whoever wins the Hispanic vote wins the White House. President George W. Bush won 40-percent of the Hispanic vote in 2004. In Lee County there are more than 90-thousand Hispanics. But only 20-thousand of them are registered to vote. And if there’s a repeat of 2004 then many of those voters may not even go to the polls tomorrow. WGCU’s Luis Hernandez spoke some of the county’s Hispanic leaders to find out why turn-out among Latinos is historically so low.

State House District 72

For the first time in a decade a Democrat is vying to fill House Seat 72. Democrat Judy “J.J” Juliano is taking on incumbent Republican Paige Kreegel. District 72 encompasses DeSoto County, much of Charlotte and a sliver of Lee – including Lehigh Acres. WGCU’s Valerie Alker spoke to the candidates and has this report.

Florida House District 77 Race

Voters in Collier, Glades, Hendry and Highlands counties will choose a candidate for Florida House seat 77 in the upcoming election. District 77 extends from the Southwestern border of Lake Okeechobee through northern portions of Collier County. Democratic candidate Elton Gissendanner faces Republican incumbent, Denise Grimsley. WGCU’s John Davis talked to both candidates about their political positions and visions for the district’s future.

Susan Rice in Tallahassee

District 13 Debate

The two Sarasota candidates for U-S House District 13 squared off with two independent candidates in Wauchula last week. About 50 die-hard political junkies turned out to the Hardee County Chamber of Commerce debate. Republican Congressman Vern Buchanan and Democratic challenger Christine Jennings shared the stage with independents Jan Schneider and Don Baldauf. Alex Newberry reports.
