Most of us are familiar with the term “fashion police”, but a bill being considered by the Florida Legislature this year would give the term a more literal meaning. It would require the state’s school districts to enact dress codes banning certain kinds of clothing popular among many teenagers. According to the Florida Literacy Coalition in 2003 thirty million adults were below the basic level of literacy. The Florida Family Literacy Initiative provides opportunities for families in need of reading education. Florida Senator Stephen Wise filed a bill this week that would cut the state's education budget by roughly half a billion dollars. As Alyssa Zamora reports, the cuts would take effect immediately - if and when they are approved by lawmakers during the next legislative session, which starts next month.
