FEMA$

Imagine getting money from the Federal government to help you recover from a disaster – only to be told you must pay it back less than a year later. That’s what’s happening to thousands of Floridians who are being told they got the aid by mistake. Many are still not fully recovered from last year’s hurricanes and say they don’t have the money to return. Amy Tardif reports on one woman caught in the middle. (AUDIO)

Punta Gorda 1 year later

The one-year anniversary of Hurricane Charley is approaching. Last August 13th – a Friday in fact – Charley swept across Charlotte Harbor and made landfall in downtown Punta Gorda with 145 mile an hour winds. The damage was massive. Historic structures crumbled – municipal buildings were severely damaged. Piles of debris dominated the cityscape for months. Valerie Alker has this look at Punta Gorda one year after Charley. Dennis Prep

Forecasters warn residents from Louisiana to Florida to gather their emergency supplies and plan for possible evacuations. Dennis has already been blamed for at least five deaths in Haiti. Governor Jeb Bush cut short his vacation in Maine and declared a state of emergency. Collier County is also under a state of emergency along with its Tropical storm warning. Lee, Charlotte and Sarasota counties are under a tropical storm watch. Amy Tardif has more on preparations for Dennis. (AUDIO)

Contraflow

If a category four or five hurricane were to threaten south Florida, plans could call for the reverse-laning of Interstate 75. The Florida Department of Transportation met today to discuss how to get information to motorists during such an event. Amy Tardif was there. (Audio)

Mangrove Recovery

With hurricane season just a few months away, J.N. Ding Darling wildlife refuge on Sanibel Island is still cleaning up debris left from Hurricane Charley. Volunteers spent a Saturday neck deep in water and plant debris. The clean up is part of the refuge’s Mangrove Recovery initiative. Janette Janero visited the refuge and has more in this report.
