Cantors: A Faith in Song

“CANTORS: A FAITH IN SONG” comes to Fort Myers on Sunday. Conceived as a PBS special, this show has toured internationally and nationally, and makes its first appearance in Southwest Florida. WGCU’s Amy Tardif has more.

New Contemporary Chinese Art Exhibit at FGCU

Abstract interpretations of Chinese calligraphy line the walls of the gallery at the Florida Gulf Coast University Art Complex. The Exhibition documents the fusion of tradition and modernity in cotemporary Chinese culture. WGCU’s Valerie Alker has more.

"Zap"

Some people may cringe when they get their electric bills every month. Using everyday things like hairdryers, televisions and toasters not only can rack up costs, they can be potentially hazardous. The Florida Repertory Theater and Lee County Electric Cooperative have partnered up to teach kids how to get smart, get safe, and get saving on their electric bills. WGCU's Andrea McCrary reports on a new children's play called "Zap".

Every year nearly 20-thousand people are brought into the United States as slaves for sex or labor. Florida is second only to California in the number of people sold into such bondage. Numerous groups like the Florida Coalition Against Human Trafficking are trying to bring more light to the subject. This weekend they’re opening an exhibit at the Southwest Florida Museum of History to raise awareness about human trafficking, which is happening right here in southwest Florida. WGCU’s Luis Hernandez has more.

Cellist Matt Haimovitz

Cellist Matt Haimovitz performs tonight at BIG Arts on Sanibel. Haimovitz lives in Montreal and teaches music at McGill University there. The thirty-seven year old made his professional debut at age 13 with the Israel Philharmonic under the direction of famed conductor Zubin Mehta. Since then he’s become known for performing cutting edge compositions as well as the classical repertoire – and taking his Cello to some unusual venues.

Moscow Ballet in Fort Myers

The Moscow Ballet is wrapping up its 2007 North American Tour in Florida. It performed the Great Russian Nutcracker Wednesday night at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall in Fort Myers – and gives another performance Thursday night. WGCU’s Valerie Alker reports.

Pianist Roger Williams

One of the most popular pianists in America performs in Southwest Florida tonight. Roger Williams was the first pianist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. At age 83 he still performs 14-hour-long piano marathons and as WGCU’s Amy Tardif reports, he’s considered a legend.
