Mortgage Broker Rules Changed

Criminals won't be able to work in Florida's mortgage industry under emergency rules adopted yesterday by Gov. Charlie Crist and the Cabinet. As James Call reports, the new regulations are a response to recent media reports that Florida licensed thousands of mortgage brokers with criminal backgrounds.

New Democrats on the Rise

As early voting gets underway for the August 26th primary, the state Division of Elections says new Democratic voters have registered this year at more than twice the pace of Republicans. Margie Menzel reports.

The state of Florida, by most accounts, has one of the most successful community college systems in the United States. It’s led the country in the number of associates degrees issued for six straight years. Traditionally, most of those degree holders entered the work force or moved on to a four-year university. But thanks to recent state legislation, more community colleges can retain those students by offering their own bachelor’s degree programs. And as Steve Brown reports, the move could give traditional universities some previously-unseen competition.
