New President Spot
Florida Gulf Coast University faculty, staff and students are breathing a sigh of relief - as the university can now move forward with a new leader at the helm. This weekend FGCU’s Board of Trustees chose a new president – the first leader of color the school has appointed. WGCU’s Luis Hernandez reports on the man given the responsibility of taking the university into the future.

Florida Democrats - Presidential Primary Debate
The Florida Democratic Party is urging rank and file members to demand full voting rights in the presidential nominating process. The Democratic National Committee ruled Florida delegates would not be seated during the convention unless the state party pushed their primary vote to February fifth or later. Florida Public Radio’s John Sepulvado reports.

Hurricane Andrew
On this day 15 years ago, Hurricane Andrew came ashore in southern Miami-Dade County with sustained winds of 165 miles an hour and gusts exceeding 180 miles an hour. Andrew laid the foundation for much of what former Governor Jeb Bush would deal with during his time in office. Doug Phillips reports.

Ave Maria
Classes begin Monday on the new campus of Ave Maria University near Naples. And residents are beginning trickle in to the new town of Ave Maria. Both are the result of money and influence wielded by self-made billionaire Tom Monaghan of Dominos Pizza fame. Monaghan is a devoutly conservative Catholic interested in creating a legacy. But how far his influence will extend has raised some concerns. WGCU’S Valerie Alker reports.

Biofuel from Jatropha Curcas in Lee County
There’s a new tree in town that doesn’t need any fertilizer and requires very little water. But what makes this exotic tree really unique is the small seeds that come from its fruit. These are what some state and local officials are counting on as an alternative to corn ethanol. WGCU’s Luis Hernandez reports on the first Jatropha Curcas trees planted in Florida Thursday.

Immigration Enforcement Training - Feature.
More than two dozen Collier County Sheriff’s Deputies are going back to the classroom for new training. It’s part of a first of its kind relationship between a Sheriff’s office in Florida and the federal government to try to curb illegal immigration. As WGCU’s Luis Hernandez reports nationally, the program has identified more than 22,000 illegal aliens for possible deportation over the last two years.
