Gulf Oil Claims Workshop

Businesses claiming to have lost money due to the Gulf oil spill are getting help this week with workshops in Bonita Springs and Matlacha.  The sessions are designed to guide business owners through BP’s claims process.  WGCU’s John Davis reports.

Rx Drugs Teens

Prescription drug abuse is on the rise nationwide and in Florida - not only in adults, but also teens. The Partnership for a Drug Free America’s 20th National Tracking Study on Teen Drug Abuse found that 1 in 5 teens report abusing prescription medication at least once in their lives. Experts say the rise is a product of their accessibility and the lack of awareness. As part of our Your Voice series: Addicted! - WGCU’s Farah Dosani with the Healthy State Collaborative reports.

Foreclosure Workshop

According to the latest numbers from Realty Trac, foreclosure activity is leveling off throughout the country, but Florida’s foreclosure rate is still high, ranking third in the nation.  The department of financial services is holding a workshop in Immokalee Saturday to get homeowners talking to lenders about avoiding foreclosure.  WGCU’s John Davis has more.

Methadone Clinic

Pinellas County based non-profit addiction and mental health services provider Operation Par opened a methadone clinic in Lee County to treat heroin and opiate addicts ten years ago.  Back in the year 2000 Amy Tardif traveled to what was then Operation Par’s nearest clinic, in Bradenton, to learn all about methadone before the Fort Myers clinic opened.   Here’s that story:

Summer Tourism

Florida’s Southwest Coast has escaped the oil slicks and tar balls generated by the Deepwater Horizon blowout.  So far, winds and currents have kept the oil far out of harm’s way.  But in a region where tourism is the largest industry by far, officials continue taking steps to spread the word.  WGCU’s Valerie Alker reports.

Operation Boutonniere Bust

A statewide crackdown is making sure alcoholic beverages aren’t getting into the hands of people under the age of 21.  The latest effort was called “Operation Boutonniere Bust.”  Rachelle Grossman was granted special permission to ride along with undercover agents to see first-hand if local stores were selling booze to minors.
