New NOAA Models

According to new government computer models there’s less than a 1-percent chance that southwest Florida’s coast will be directly impacted by oil from the Deepwater Horizon blowout. WGCU’s Mike Kiniry has more.

Beach Patrol

Sanibel Island is organizing a beach patrol, training volunteers to be on the lookout for oil and tar balls.  WGCU’s Valerie Alker reports.

Bridge Closure

Work to rehabilitate the State Road 29 drawbridge in LaBelle gets underway Monday, July 5th.  The bridge will be closed to all traffic until at least August 8th.  WGCU’s Valerie Alker reports.

Long Term Oil Impacts

Not a whole lot is known about the long term impact of oil on coastal ecosystems.  A researcher at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota studied a spill near the mouth of Tampa Bay back in 1993…and did a follow up study 8 years later.  WGCU’s Mike Kiniry reports on what she found…
