FGCU’s Big Solar Plans

In this economy the cost of everything seems to keep going up, including electricity. Southwest Florida will soon have an impressive example of energy saving technology. Florida Gulf Coast University plans to build a 2 megawatt solar field. WGCU’s Andrea McCrary reports.

Florida’s Nuclear Need

The Florida Public Service Commission has determined there is a need for two proposed nuclear reactors in northwest Florida. Progress Energy plans to build the reactors in Levy (Lee-vee) County at a cost of 17-billion dollars. Gina Jordan reports.

NEW VOTING MACHINES

After the Bush/Gore debacle in 2000, Florida invested millions of dollars into touch screen voting machines. But this year they’re at it again - and southwest Florida is at the forefront of ensuring that history doesn’t repeat itself in November. WGCU’s Tyrone Martin was at a recent unveiling of the new machines in Lee County and filed this report.

Cycle Safety Campaign

Last year more than 500 motorcyclists died - and about 9-thousand were injured - in accidents on Florida’s highways. Officials with the state’s Department of Highway Safety say they want those numbers to drop. They’ve introduced a new campaign to try to make drivers more aware of cyclists on the road. Lynn Hatter reports.

Local Reaction to Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac

News that the federal government is considering stepping in to prop up the quasi-governmental mortgage giants Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac has rocked the financial world. But president of Naples Classic Mortgage – Robert Harry – says he doesn’t see much risk to homeowners, although loans for people with less-than-perfect credit are going to be even harder to come by. Harry worked as an account manager for Freddie Mac from about 10 years starting in the mid 80s. He told WGCU’s Mike Kiniry that Fannie & Freddie aren’t sub-prime lenders trying to stay afloat…but solid companies suffering a crisis of shareholder confidence…
