2008 School Grades Released

Grades for Florida’s public schools are going up. The Department of Education released the 2008 school grades yesterday. Students did well on the FCAT this year and the DOE says the school grades reflect that. Lynn Hatter reports.

Reef Conference

Scientists from around the world are meeting in Fort Lauderdale this week to talk about ongoing threats to coral reefs. Governor Charlie Crist marked the event by signing a bill that will phase out the dumping of sewage into the ocean, which some say is damaging the reef system. Trimmel Gomes reports.

Thoughts on Rising Gas Prices

Last week “Triple A” reported the price of gasoline rose an average 39-percent over last years average of $2.90 in Lee County. Needless to say, many southwest Floridians are looking for ways to conserve. So, WGCU’s Valerie Alker and Tyrone Martin set out—on foot of course—to hear how people on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast University are dealing with ballooning gas prices.

CHAIN Campaign for Affordable Healthcare

The Florida Community Health Action Information Network, called Florida CHAIN, is working with Health Care for America Now to launch a nationwide campaign for an affordable health care system. As Lynn Hatter reports, their goal in Florida is to increase awareness, and change the way people look at health care.

FEA President Andy Ford

Nearly 10-thousand teachers, administrators and education officials are gathered in Washington D-C thru the weekend for the National Education Association’s 146th annual Representative Assembly…including many from here in Florida. The Assembly is the highest decision-making body within the more than 3-million-member NEA. One of this year’s attendees is Andy Ford, president of the Florida Education Association. Casino Deal Overturned

The Florida Supreme Court has overturned an agreement Governor Charlie Crist signed with the Seminole Tribe to expand gambling at its casinos. But it may be weeks or longer before the true impact of the ruling is known. Bobbie O’Brien reports.
