Oil Spill 50th Day Vigil

Thousands of people are expected to attend vigils across the country tonight, marking the 50th day of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and calling for increased efforts to stop it and clean it up.  WGCU’s John Davis has more.

6-Man Football

There is a league of  high schools in Florida that participate in a unique form of football; 6-Man football, a version of the grid-iron game made popular in the rural regions of Texas.  This version is played on a shorter field and combined scores in the 100’s are typical.  WGCU’s Luis Hernandez reports on the newest crop of schools to join the league from the state’s southern region.

Less-Lethal Weapons Testing at FGCU

In an unmarked building, not far from Florida Gulf Coast University, Dr. Charles Mesloh is teaching criminal justice students how to test less-lethal weapons used by law enforcement.  On one particular day they’re testing claims of a weapons ability that was made on a popular television program.  WGCU’s Luis Hernandez reports.

Oil Spill Preparation

Southwest Florida has been spared impacts from the massive Deep Water Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico – at least so far.  But area agencies and residents are not being complacent.  They’re putting together plans for protecting estuaries, beaches and sensitive mangroves – just in case winds and ocean currents bring the oil to this way.  WGCU’s Valerie Alker has more.

More Bridging for Tamiami Trail

In December work began in Miami Dade County to replace a mile of the Tamiami trail with a bridge to restore water flow from north to south.  Now there’s a plan to build an additional five and half miles of bridges.  WGCUs Valerie Alker reports.
