2008 Climate Change Summit

Governor Charlie Crist promised sweeping reform to the state’s energy policy during last year’s climate change summit, but a year later some environmentalist say many of his goals fell short, especially when it comes to the state’s energy bill. Trimmel Gomes reports.

Walking Trail Proposed in Collier County

Collier County Transportation officials want to create a trail for non motorized travel that would connect Immokalee to northeast Collier County and possibly Ave Maria…but they need more public input before moving forward on the idea. WGCU’s Luis Hernandez reports.

Stimulating Our Gas Tanks

American families are spending their economic stimulus checks on gas. An analysis from the Florida Public Interest Research Group shows that since President Bush approved the rebates in mid-February, the average household has spent more than 15-hundred dollars filling their tanks. But Gina Jordan tells us Congress may offer some help this week.

Panther Habitat Plan

A plan unveiled Monday by a group of environmental advocates and landowners would set aside about 160-thousand acres in Collier County as panther habitat. WGCU’s Mike Kiniry reports.

It’s like Smart Growth planning with the Florida panther in mind. The proposed plan outlines which areas of panther habitat around Immokalee in Collier County could be developed…and which could not.

Alan Keller is President of the Collier County Audubon Society…one of the partnering conservation organizations behind the plan.

NCLB Study

Enacted in 2002, No Child Left Behind forced states to step up their accountability measures with increased testing. In Florida it meant the FCAT. Since the program’s start test scores in Florida have been steadily rising. And as Lynn Hatter reports, those gains aren’t flukes…but are part of a national trend.
