Immigration Reform Coincidence

Thursday’s news of the U-S Senate’s vote to kill the latest attempt at immigration reform caused ripples at the third annual Hispanic Summit, hosted by the Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce. Judith Smelser was there and has this report.

Nile Monitor Lizard Q&A

The presence of exotic, voracious Nile Monitor Lizards has been confirmed on Sanibel Island. The omnivorous reptiles can grow up to seven feet long. They have a high reproductive rate, and in South Florida no predators to keep them in check. Biologists say they’re a major threat to small mammals and birds, and that this poses a major problem on Sanibel Island, which is home to Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge – known around the world as a major birding hot spot. Rob Jess is the refuge manger.

Baggage Handling at RSW

The executive director of Southwest Florida International Airport will ask the Lee County Port Authority Wednesday to approve turning over to a private contractor the handling of outbound luggage. The move comes as customer complaints about baggage handling at RSW have mounted – but Director Bob Ball says that’s not a factor in the expected change WGCU’s Valerie Alker has more.

Shred a Thon

Identity theft is a problem striking more people every day. The Federal Trade Commission estimates nearly 18-thousand Floridians had their identities stolen last year. Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum wants to educate people on how they can protect themselves. He attended what’s called a Shred-A-Thon outside a Sarasota bank on Tuesday. Alex Newberry was there and has this report.
