Lymphedema Study

The American Cancer Society reports 15 to 20 percent of breast cancer survivors will develop lymphedema; a condition identified by fluid retention and swelling in a particular part of the body. Yet there’s been very little research into treating this chronic condition, and almost none conducted in the United States.  Now, Rehabilitation Associates of Naples is teaming up with Vanderbilt University on a new study to look at the effectiveness of laser treatments on patients with breast cancer related lymphedema.  WGCU’s John Davis reports.

Gulf Oil Spill - Sanibel and Captiva

Some resort owners on Sanibel and Captiva Islands are worried that news on the oil spill in the Gulf is going to hurt business this summer.  As WGCU’s Luis Hernandez reports they’re already getting cancellations.

S.W.A.T. in Ft. Myers

Oil Tourism

The huge oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico is not expected to impact Florida’s Southwest Coast anytime soon, if at all.  But it is impacting reservations for the summer tourist season. WGCU’s Valerie Alker reports.

Bike to Work Week 2010

This year’s Bike to Work Week has special meaning to those who ride their bikes regularly.  WGCU’s Luis Hernandez reports on an effort by some to kill a bill from the Florida legislature they believe is bad for cyclists.

Now that oil from the spill is in the Loop Current it could end up in Cuban waters within days. There, it would affect healthy corals and critical habitat for endangered species such as manatees and sea turtles. So the Washington, D.C. based Ocean Foundation is helping its Cuban colleagues prepare.  WGCU’s Amy Tardif spoke with the Director of the Ocean Foundation’s Cuba Marine Research & Conservation Program, Dr. David Guggenheim, about this.

Everglades DVD

Middle School students in Southwest Florida are learning about the vast and varied wetland  that’s in their backyard – the Everglades.  This year teachers have new a tool, it’s an interactive   DVD called “The Future of America’s Everglades”.  WGCU’s Valerie Alker recently sat in with 7th graders at Cypress Lake Middle School who were learning lessons about their environment.
