Everglades

The plan to restore the Everglades looks to be moving forward – again. The South Florida Water Management District is now waiting for the courts to decide if bonds will be issued for the 536-million dollar purchase of lands owned by U-S Sugar. WGCU’s Luis Hernandez reports.

Salvation Army Expands

The Salvation Army in Ft. Myers has taken its “Meals with Compassion” program to a new level – with the addition of an outdoor dining area complete with a privacy fence and potted plants.  WGCU’s Valerie Alker has more.

Lee County Fallen Officer Ceremony

Extremely Dry

Parts
of Southwest Florida saw some afternoon showers on Wednesday with more
rain expected in the coming days, but water managers say it will take
more than that to move the region out of a severe drought.  WGCU’s John
Davis has more.

Tourism Roundup

Local tourism boosters are marking the 26th
annual National Travel and Tourism Week.  Southwest Florida’s bustling
winter tourist season has drawn to a close.  Visitors spent less this
year.  But as WGCU’s John Davis reports, local visitor and convention
bureaus are trying to buck that trend, adapting marketing strategies to
boost off season visitation in the midst of an economic recession.

Stamp Out Hunger

Postal
patrons around the country this Saturday left food by their mailboxes –
as part of the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Nationally, last
year 70 million pounds of food was collected.  And the numbers are
looking good this year.  In Lee County 305 thousand pounds of food was
collected by letter carriers and volunteers.  Other volunteers
delivered it to the Harry Chapin Food Banks in Ft. Myers.    WGCU’s
Valerie Alker reports.
