Algenol Resumes Expansion Despite New Law

The Fort Myers-based company Algenol Biofuels, Inc., resumed construction last week on its expansion plans after a high-stress hiatus. 

The biotech company, which produces ethanol from algae, put a halt to its expansion about two months ago due to roadblocks from the state legislature.

The Dunbar Easter Parade Still Going Strong

The streets of downtown Ft. Myers will be lined with spectators this Sunday – taking in the 68th Annual Dunbar Easter Parade.   The parade is a  tradition dating back to 1945.  The driving force behind its creation was Evelyn Sams Canady – a teacher who wanted her black students to have a celebration of their own to rival the City of Palms annual Festival of Light.  Sams Canady was Daisy Upshaw Benjamin’s third grade teacher.  The retired educator and volunteer with the Lee County Black History  Society has fond memories of Sams Canady and the Parade.

Where we live matters to our health – according to a new report released this week. The 2012 County Health Rankings analyzes the health of nearly every county in the nation.

Out of Florida’s 67 counties, Sarasota ranked as the 3rd healthiest, while Glades County, just an hour and a half east of Sarasota, ranked 58th.
