Flora & Ella's
Drive east about an hour on State Road 80 and you’ll find the doors of one of Labelle’s venerable institutions darkened and shuttered. After more than 75 years serving friends and family from near and far, Flora & Ella’s Restaurant and County Store closed earlier this month. Bonita Bay Group bought the restaurant along with the rights to the recipes that made Flora & Ella’s pies world famous.
We left Fort Myers hours before dawn had begun to pierce the Southwest Florida sky. After reading in a local paper that Flora & Ella’s would soon close, we wanted to get there early and (hopefully) avoid the crowds.

Church Schism
Newspaper ads and billboards asking “is your faith being nurtured by the Diocese of Venice?” have recently appeared across SW Florida. They were placed by parishioners who don’t like the policies enacted by Bishop Frank DeWayne the spiritual leader of the regions 250-thousand Catholics. WGCU’s Valerie Alker has more in this report.

Cancer Research
Some say cancer treatments can be just as bad for a patient’s well being as the cancer itself. But part-time Sanibel resident John Kanzius had aimed to change that. The late inventor and cancer patient developed a device, which some believe has the potential to cure cancer. Researchers continue to assess the new treatment, and, as WGCU’s Farah Dosani reports, the head researcher visited Florida Gulf Coast University Monday to update the findings.

Teens Only Town Hall
On Tuesday, members of Florida’s Youth Commission travelled to Tallahassee to meet with elected officials for what was billed as a “teens only” Town Hall. The meeting gave teens an opportunity to voice their concerns about issues related to young people. The delegation included one Fort Myers teen. WGCU’s Valarie Edwards has more.
