A new Southwest Florida non-profit is working to help low-income families save money by giving out cloth diapers and reusable supplies.

Until recently, local families who needed help with the cost of diapers could only get disposables. That’s why Britt Schwartz founded Cloth My Heart; she realized there were no local resources offering cloth diapers.

About 150 people are demonstrating in front of Publix Supermarket’s  headquarters in Lakeland this week.   About sixty are fasting.  The so-called “Fast for Fair Food” is the latest move in the ongoing standoff between the state’s largest retail grocery chain and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers.  WGCU’s Valerie Alker reports.

About 100 people have dialed 2-1-1 since The Community Foundation of Collier County launched the confidential information and referral service last month to connect callers to area service providers.

Despite the economic downturn, the state’s largest retirement community hasn’t laid off a single one of its employees. At Shell Point Retirement Community, located in Ft. Myers near the Sanibel Causeway, 2,200 residents are served by a dynamic work force of nearly 900. READ MORE

Naples Attorney Patrick White was recently named the new President of “Families of Flight 93”. White’s cousin, Joey Nackee, was one of the forty people on the United Airlines plane that crashed in a field near Shanksville Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001. A land use attorney, White has worked with the Department of the Interior and the National Parks Service to acquire land and funds to build the Flight 93 National Memorial at the crash site. White said he had no idea his cousin was on plane that day from Newark bound for San Fransisco.
