Water Quality/Treatment Area East of Labelle

The South Florida Water Management District has finalized a deal to buy about 17-hundred acres of orange groves east of Labelle to create a water treatment and testing facility. It’s the first project approved under the new Northern Everglades and Estuaries Program, signed into law by Governor Charlie Crist earlier this year. WGCU’s Mike Kiniry reports.

Joys of Adoption Conference

November is National Adoption Month and according to the most recent numbers from the Federal Government about 7,000 children in foster care in Florida are waiting to be adopted. The Children's Network of Southwest Florida recently held its 4th annual Joys of Adoption Conference highlighting the great need for adoptive families in the area. WGCU's Andrea McCrary reports.

Local Bay of Pigs Commemoration

A group of Cuban exiles came from Miami to an island off the coast of Southwest Florida this weekend to commemorate 47 years since they secretly trained there to overthrow Fidel Castro. WGCU’s Amy Tardif was there and has this report.

Lyn Millner's Zany Challenges - Cheerleading

If you watched the Miami Dolphins game yesterday maybe you saw the cheerleaders on the sidelines. The squad is selected after an intense, week-long competition. Two hundred women tried out this year for the team, including producer Lyn Millner.


You wouldn’t take Lyn for a cheerleader. She’s 40, kind of bookish, she has short hair and wears glasses. So—why did she audition? This week, she takes us along for some zany challenges, such as this.

Anti-Bullying Efforts Part Three

Researchers have linked bullying to school safety and student achievement. But educators and parents say there's a need for more initiatives that really work.


The Lee County School District conducted a 3-day "Bully Safe" training for staff this week.

Collier County Kettle Kick Off

The Collier County Salvation Army kicked off its 2007 Kettle campaign a little differently than in the past. It got things going with a fundraising luncheon featuring best selling author Robin Cook.
