The Coalition of Immokalee Workers is protesting Burger King’s headquarters in Miami today. They want the fast food giant to pay workers another penny a pound for harvesting tomatoes. Burger King says the coalition can’t prove workers are receiving the extra penny. CIW says Burger King is trying to skirt the issue. WGCU’s Luis Hernandez reports.

State Senators Weigh in on Tax Cuts

State Senators Mike Bennett and Dave Aronberg - both of whose districts include parts of southwest Florida - were on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast University yesterday. The spoke to WGCU's Valerie Alker about the role of a property tax cut in bolstering the state's sagging economy.

Small Plane Crash at RSW

One man died when his small plane crashed Wednesday morning near Southwest Florida International Airport. National transportation safety officials are investigating what caused his single engine plane to crash. WGCU’s Luis Hernandez reports.

Floridians for Smarter Growth's Carole Green

A group called Florida Hometown Democracy is collecting signatures in hopes of getting an amendment to the state constitution on the November, 2008 ballot that would change how city and county comprehensive plans would be amended. The idea has gotten plenty of attention…and drawn stiff opposition from those who say it would hurt the state’s economy.


Yesterday WGCU's Mike Kiniry spoke with that group’s president - Palm Beach attorney Leslie Blackner. Today he chats with former state lawmaker Carole Green, who now chairs the Lee & Collier initiative for Floridians for Smarter Growth, that’s the main group opposing the amendment. She says while she understands the need to better manage growth…this amendment is not the solution.
