State House District 72

For the first time in a decade a Democrat is vying to fill House Seat 72. Democrat Judy “J.J” Juliano is taking on incumbent Republican Paige Kreegel. District 72 encompasses DeSoto County, much of Charlotte and a sliver of Lee – including Lehigh Acres. WGCU’s Valerie Alker spoke to the candidates and has this report.

Tourism Officials on Offshore Drilling

Tourism is Florida’s biggest industry, attracting millions of visitors to its beaches. That’s one of the main reasons the state’s tourism industry has long been opposed to offshore drilling…But not any more. State tourism officials now say they believe beaches and oil rigs can peacefully coexist. Trimmel Gomes has more.

Florida House District 77 Race

Voters in Collier, Glades, Hendry and Highlands counties will choose a candidate for Florida House seat 77 in the upcoming election. District 77 extends from the Southwestern border of Lake Okeechobee through northern portions of Collier County. Democratic candidate Elton Gissendanner faces Republican incumbent, Denise Grimsley. WGCU’s John Davis talked to both candidates about their political positions and visions for the district’s future.

Betty Muzinara at Florida Gulf Coast University

Florida House Seat 71

Republicans are fighting to maintain their hold of the Florida House. In the race for Seat 71, Republican Ken Roberson is facing Democrat Betty Gissendanner. Lee County & the Red Sox

Lee County stepped up to the plate Tuesday and asked the Boston Red Sox to stay for the next 30 years. The county says it will use 20 percent of its tourist development budget to build a new spring training stadium. WGCU’s Amy Tardif has more.
