Worker Freeze

The prolonged January cold snap has put untold thousands of Florida farm workers out of work and in danger of becoming homeless.  Agencies and advocates are trying to help. WGCU’s Luis Hernandez was in Immokalee and has this report on a town where many of the inhabitants are becoming desperate.

Peter Max

Pop artist Peter Max returns to Southwest Florida this weekend.   He’ll be at the Olde Florida Gallerie at the Bell Tower in Ft. Myers Friday evening and Saturday afternoon – and in Naples at the Road Show Company Saturday evening.  First known for his “Cosmic” images in the 1960s and later for iconic paintings of the statue of liberty and American Flag – his work continues to evolve. These days he’s painting portraits of artists  breathing new life into images of Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Matisse, Guagine – and a host of others.

Florida Gulf Coast University’s recognition of Human Trafficking Awareness month culminated Wednesday with a symposium on human slavery and it’s pervasiveness in Southwest Florida and throughout the country.  WGCU’s John Davis reports.

Will Steger

National Geographic Polar Explorer Will Steger speaks at Edison College in Punta Gorda tomorrow.  Steger has travelled to the Arctic and  Antarctic many times over the last 40 years.   And he’s seen some changes.

Coral Bleaching

South Florida’s costal water temperatures dropped down to the lower 50s earlier this month, bleaching and even killing some coral reefs.  State and federal governmental agencies, environmental research groups and academic organizations are surveying the damage.  WGCU’s John Davis reports.
