Former Official Defends Volunteer Screenings

Some advocates for seniors were riled by Gov. Rick Scott's recent veto of legislation that would have eased criminal background screenings for volunteers working with the elderly.

They said the cost of background checks could deter some people from volunteering.  Scott said eliminating them posed a risk to vulnerable seniors.  Carole Green, secretary of the Department of Elder Affairs under Gov. Jeb Bush, agrees with Scott. READ MORE

 

"I think there's some cases across the state right now that are abysmal about what's happening to some of our elderly.  I think we need to be very cautious about that," she said. "I think background screening has its place in being able to protect those vulnerable citizens."

Criminal background checks cost about $45. Some social service organizations pay for their volunteers' background checks. Others require the volunteers to foot the bill.
