Walt Donovan

Written by
This week is the 48th anniversary of Hurricane Donna – which struck Florida’s west coast. The director of Civil Defense in Collier County during the 1960 hurricane season, Walt Donovan, speaks about his memories of the category four storm at the Naples Preserve Friday afternoon at 3:30. He took copious notes during the storm and used them to write “Hurricane Alert”, a novel published in 1970. Donovan says the book spurred two attempts on his life because it addressed the political tensions that peaked during the storm. And he says Collier citizens had a false sense of security during Hurricane Donna. Donovan spoke with WGCU’s Valerie Alker about his memories.
