Florida: Heaven on Earth?

Florida:  Heaven on Earth? explores the creation and development of four unique spiritual communities in Florida:  the Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp in central Florida;  the Koreshan Unity in Estero; Kashi Ashram in Sebastian;  and Ave Maria in eastern Collier County. This hour-long documentary examines the role and importance of spiritual ideas and motivations in the creation of successful and sustainable communities. Funded through a grant from the Florida Humanities Council with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Despite foundations centered on God and good intentions, each of these communities struggled with detractors and the derogatory label of “cult.” Three of these communities survive -- so far. One did not. In the universal quest for a fulfilling life and a Utopia of the heart and mind, these communities offer templates for success — and failure — and, perhaps, hope for seekers looking for a place they can call “heaven on earth.”
