Southwest Florida Symphony

“Corigliano, Bruch, Beethoven”

The lush string sonorities and shifting harmonies reflect the dreaminess of a lonely lover in Voyage by the celebrated composer, John Corigliano. Max Bruch was widely known in his day as a composer, conductor and teacher. It is his first violin concerto, in G minor, that brought him his earliest and most enduring fame. Beethoven completed his Seventh Symphony in 1812 and the work was premiered in Vienna on December 8, 1813 in a concert to benefit wounded soldiers.

Dr. Marshall is Professor of Organ at Arizona State University. She will play a Ganz Deutsch (all German) recital, with music written as far back as the 1600s. This music comes alive on the world-renowned Douglass organ, known for its colorful and clear tones. With Dr. Marshall’s superb specialized aroque technique, you'll experience a sonic time travel voyage -- with an expert at the musical helm!

The Score with Edmund Stone is a weekly celebration of symphonic music in film, a fascinating cultural adventure through America’s best-loved art form.

Shelley Plays Schumann
Thursday 5/17 @ 8:00pm
Howard Shelley, one of the world's most acclaimed classical pianists performs Schumann’s Piano Concerto. Although written in a minor key, the Schumann concerto is a lovely, uplifting work, full of the wondrous lyrical flourishes for which Schumann was known. Also showcased in this program: Mahler’s mysterious and dynamic first symphony, a work that merges song and symphony, celebrated for its ethereal opening, the haunting minor key version of Frère Jacques in the third movement and the lengthy, triumphant finale.

   

The Metropolitan Opera

The Metropolitan Opera's Saturday matinee broadcasts are the longest-running continuous classical program in radio history. These performances air from December through May.
